EER Project #1: Engineering Wellness: Developing and Assessing a First-Year Engineering Course to Support Student Wellness
Faculty Mentor: Karin Jensen, [email protected]
Prerequisites: N/A
Project Description: The Thrive Research Lab (https://kjens.engin.umich.edu/) is studying how well-being and wellness education can be effectively integrated into first-year engineering curricula. Specifically, this project focuses on the development and improvement of a required first-year engineering course (ENGR 100). Our instructional team created a BME-based section of this class that was piloted in the fall semester of 2023 and offered again in 2024 as ENGR100.520: Engineering Wellness. The main objective of ENGR 100 is to introduce first-year students to the design thinking process and help them learn how to communicate in a technical setting. With a focus on wellness, our section explores research and technologies that support both mental health and physical health. In addition to lectures, discussion, and lab, students work with a team to analyze and iterate on a commercially available at-home biosensor (e.g., Fitbit smartwatch, Garmin running watch, Muse meditation headband, etc.). As part of this project, we will be conducting interviews with first-year engineering students and instructors. In parallel, we will continue to develop the curriculum and resources as part of the class. The SURE student will learn qualitative data collection and analysis, as well as be introduced to quantitative survey data collection and analysis.
